Unavowed is the culmination of all the years spent perfecting the craft. The game opens in media res with an exorcism. You’ve apparently been possessed by a demon who needs to be cast out from within you. It’s here that you can choose your character’s background - a bartender, actor, or cop. I’ve played the first two (I won’t be choosing cop any time soon) and without spoiling too much, there are more than enough unique interactions and story lines based on your character’s past to warrant multiple playthroughs even after you’ve encountered all the twists and turns of the main story....

There’s a paper-thin story about trying to take down the Catalonian mob, but really it’s sort of just a weird mix between Burnout and GTA. You smash through billboards, sideswipe other cars in Michael Bay-esque slo-mo, all while Vincent Diesel spouts one-liners with about the level of enthusiasm you’d expect from the Fast And Furious star. He plays a sort of suped-up version of himself, like a V6 engine born of flesh and bone, and powered by Lynx Africa....

Calm Down, Stalin is a game about the stresses involved in everyday life when you’re the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. These stresses manifest as a sort of dictatorial QWOP, flailing Uncle Joe’s arms about to answer phone calls, whack a faulty desk lamp, smoke from your incredibly fancy pipe, and threateningly hover your index finger just slightly above the “launch nukes” button....

Before a level, you’d build up your castle from a series of modular rooms, taking into account both the structural integrity, and the troop types those rooms would provide. Then you’d hit play, and face off against an enemy castle across a short stretch of ground. You would send various brutes and roustabouts marching across no-man’s-land, with the aim of capturing and returning a flag, and the enemy’s scoundrels and ruffians would wade in the opposite direction, mashing yours when they met....

Two weeks ago, FF14 producer and director Naoki Yoshida announced that they’d resume sales today but keep the free trial on hold. And they’ve done just that. You can purchase the game on digital storefronts, like it was before ‘The Success’. Also as expected, the free trial still isn’t available to download. Squeenix are still monitoring server stability on this front, so only time will tell when it’s back up and running....

I’m comfortable with this knowledge about myself. Here’s the thing about Heardle: where Wordle and Worldle are puzzle games, Heardle feels more like a straight trivia game. It’s almost always possible to work your way towards the answer in Wordle with a basic vocabulary, and the arrows and distance information in Worldle lets you investigate your way towards the solution even when you don’t recognise the country’s silhouette....

The open beta goes live today at 3pm BST (7am PT), and runs until 8am BST (12am PT) on September 12th. To get access, you’ll need to head to the New World Steam page and click “request access” just underneath the game’s purchasing options. Then at some point today, you should get an email letting you know when you can download the beta. It’s also worth noting that if you played in the previous beta, you can’t use that old build you have downloaded....

Paradox haven’t given any hints of what to expect, only that the stream will feature upcoming games with trailers, “deep dives”, and interviews with the developers. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 is the Paradox game I’m most excited about, obviously, but I’d deem it unlikely appear during the broadcast....

Absolution is not the best Hitman, to put it kindly. Previously, Hitman sequels could contain updated versions of levels from previous games, assuming you owned those previous games. Throw in DLC, then game and DLC bundles, then launch exclusivity on different storefronts, and working out what to buy just to efficiently get the new stuff you wanted was difficult. As of Jan 26th, there will just be two Hitman products for sale, IO Interactive say. Hitman World Of Assassination, which includes all the levels from Hitman 1 and 2 and all Hitman 1’s DLC for $70; and Hitman World Of Assassination Deluxe Edition, which bolts on Hitman 2 and 3’s DLC for an additional $30....

In a statement, Kojima Productions said the plot of the film adaptation is “being kept under wraps”, but it will introduce new elements and characters within the Death Stranding series. Does that mean there will be continuity between the film and the games? The two Cosmos headsets are a decent choice if the Valve Index is out of your price range and you can’t stand the idea of getting cosy with Facebook (sorry, Meta) and the Oculus Quest 2, but they’re also my least favourite headests of the bunch. After roughly twenty minutes trying, I didn’t get a chance to watch the nuke go off and blow Verdansk into the 1980s. Instead, I stared at a server queue, then proceeded to gaze at streamers crash to their desktop over and over again. I should’ve posted Johnny Cash’s “Hurt”, instead. Perhaps more than anything, I was sad to have been deprived of a goodbye. All those hours in the original Verdansk incinerated as I, stone-faced, watched a streamer I didn’t know yell “ohmygod” (and generate the perfect thumbnail for their upcoming reaction video in the process)....
